CAROLYN O'CONNELL

Time Lag

Bottom of Form
from Plasterer’s Mate 1992 by Toby Granville

You stare at me, impatient to be away
as the five o’clock light dapples your
marbled nakedness. Your eyes are already
elsewhere, every nerve striving escape.

The pan you fried eggs in lies empty,
the last of yesterday’s papers sculpted by
plaster wipings wait the black plastic bag.

Now our history-moled basement walls
are hung with new ochre skins
made from your unblemished plaster,
Drying in the trapped heat.

Decalaj

Ma fixezi, nerabdatoare sa pleci
de indata ce lumina dupa-amiezii iti pistruiaza
goliciunea de marmura. Ochii-ti privesc deja
in alta parte si fiecare nerv se zbate sa se elibereze.

E goala tigaia in care ai prajit oua,
iar ultimele ziare de ieri sunt scrobite de resturi de tencuiala
si asteapta sa fie aruncate intr-o punga neagra.

Acum, in pivnita noastra, peretii patati de povesti
au o fata noua in tonuri de ocru
de la tencuiala ta neintinata
si se usuca in caldura sufocanta.
