“He gave me a long look.Then he changed, he got out the chess-board and we played chess and he let me beat him.He wouldn’t admit it, but I am sure he did.He hardly said anything, we seemd to communicate through the chessmen, there was something very symbolic about my winning.That he wished me to feel.I don’t know what it was.I don’t know whether it was that he wanted me to see my “ virtue” triumphed over his “ vice”, or something subtler, that sometimes losing is winning.”

M-a privit lung. Apoi si-a schimbat hainele, a adus tabla de sah, am jucat si m-a lasat sa-l bat. Nu ar fi admis asta, dar sunt sigura ca a facut-o. Abia a scos cateva cuvinte, insa parea ca noi comunicam prin intermediul pieselor, era ceva simbolic in castigarea partidei. Asta isi dorea ca eu sa simt. Nu stiu ce era, nu stiu daca voia sa vad triumfand virtutea mea peste viciul lui, sau ceva mai subtil, ca uneori a pierde inseamna a castiga.
